Judge Cannon Clears Way for DOJ to Release Part of Special Counsel’s Report on Trump
Florida District Judge Aileen Cannon has allowed the Justice Department to release the first part of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s inquiry into President-elect Donald Trump. The report focuses on Trump’s involvement in the 2020 election interference case. Cannon denied a motion from Trump’s former co-defendants to block the release.
While the DOJ has agreed not to release the second volume of the report, which concerns the classified documents case, it aims to make the first volume public. Last week, Cannon temporarily blocked the full release until a federal appeals court resolves the issue. Trump has argued the special counsel’s appointment was unlawful and that any public report would hurt his transition to the White House. Legal appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court could still prevent the release.
